Unit Objectives and Readings-Assignments for Week 6!

*Discourse-Genre Expectations: Writing Resumes and Cover letters. Reading Chapter 15 sections "Preparing an Effective Resume," "Writing an Effective Letter of Application," and  "Completing a Job or an Internship Application." Optional reading (recommended) is Chapter 15 section "Doing Well in the Interview."

*Appendix A "Writing in an Online Environment" from our textbook.

*Read "How This Simple Resume Model and Career Portfolio Example Landed a Dream Job"--link: https://www.intelivate.com/career-strategy/simple-resume-model-career-portfolio-example

*Watch "Curating Your Digital Identity Using Your ePortfolio" and "Create A Killer UX Design Portfolio With These Pro Tips" (see Unit Notes Below to Watch the videos)

*Weekly Post 5: The first draft of Assignment 2. You already selected two possible job ads that you are interested in and qualified to apply as you worked on Weekly Post 4. As you start working on your first draft, select one of those two possible positions. For this draft draft, work on your analysis (the organization/company of the job you are applying, the position description from the job ad, and you target audience meaning the people working at the organization/company you are seeking employment at) along with your cover letter, resume, and your e-portfolio shell. To prepare the first draft of your e-portfolio shell, you need to design which digital platform you want to use. In last week's unit notes, I provided you different options and asked you pick three that you might be interested in using; now it is time to decide which one you are going to use to create your e-portfolio. After you make your decision, start working on creating the main section you want to include in your e-portfolio (the articles and videos provided for this week should give you options) by considering your purpose and how you want to present your professional identity and ethos. At this point, you do not have to worry about the content you are going to include in the main sections of your e-portfolio. You need to think about the overall layout and the design and focus. In other words, you should work on the design and layout of your e-portfolio and create its sections, and you are not required to include content in those main sections, at least not for the first draft. Your first draft is due on BB, March 1 by noon! This time, you are not required to post a response to another classmate's post since you will complete the peer-review exercise the following week (week 7) in your assigned groups.

*If you have questions, post them to the submission box "Questions-Clarifications About Assignment 2" on BB.

Important Update!

Change in Assignment 2 Deadline: The original deadline for final draft submissions was March 8 (by the end of the day). The new deadline is March 15 (by the end of the day).

Now that you have a better understanding about how to find the right jobs for you and where, you can start thinking about how to format, design, and organize your Resume/C.V. and start planning your Cover Letter. Use additional resources from UTEP University Career Center's Sample Documents of Resumes, Cover Letters, Thank you Letters in addition to checklists and strategies: https://www.utep.edu/student-affairs/careers/students-alumni/Sample%20Documents.html

Also, Purdue Owl Writing Lab has great resources; here is their extensive section on writing Resumes and CVs:

Here Are the Two Videos that You Need to Watch This Week:

The first video provides you an overall introduction and explains different types of e-portfolios that you might want to create for yourself considering your career interests and your target audience.

The second video is specifically for designers. However, a lot of tips and strategies provided in this video apply to professionals in other industries. In this sense, the information you will be receiving from this video is transferrable to your context.
