Unit Objectives and  Readings-Assignments for Week 4!

*Peer-Review week: In your assigned groups and by using the guidelines you are provided, offer your group members insightful, critical, and constructive feedback over their Assignment 1 draft.

*Revising Drafts: After receiving feedback from your group members, focus on revising your draft and make it ready for final submission, which is due on Feb. 15 by the end of the day.

*In addition to the peer-review guidelines (see below), use Appendix B from our textbook.

*Read Chapter 4 "Revising a Document" from our textbook as a resource to help you with your revision process.

*Review and Use the Peer-Review Guidelines provided below!

Peer-Review Guidelines!

General Approach to Peer-Review:

Global issues:

- Audience and Purpose:

  • Can the audience be named?
  • Is the purpose clear?
  • Does this purpose match the assignments’ criteria?

- Focus and Content:

  • Is the introduction clear?
  • Is the text aligned with the articulated purpose?
  • Is there anything that does not belong?

- Organization:

  • Check the flow ideas: is there a connection between the ideas presented in each paragraph? Are there transitions between the paragraphs? Does each idea presented in the paper serve to presenting the main purpose/idea of the paper?
  • Are you guided through the text easily?
  • Should some sections be moved or separated?
  • Is each section organized around one main idea?

- Engaging the Reader:

  • Is the tone appropriate: for the genre? for the audience?
  • Has the writer told the reader why s/he is reading?
  • Is the “so what” addressed?
  •

Local issues: - Sentences

- Word Choice

- Grammar and Punctuation

-Formatting and Design

As you can see these are general guidelines for effective peer-review that we will use throughout the semester. To offer specific and focused feedback to your group members about these areas, you are asked to use the Assignment 1 description you were provided during week 2 and Appendix B from our textbook as well.

Specs for a Successful Peer-Review

*Contact your group member via email (you can use Blackboard).

*With your group member, determine a timeline. You have a full week to not only complete the peer-review stage but also to finalize your revising process. How you use your time is entirely up to you. For example, with your group member, you can decide to get your feedback to one another by Tuesday (end of the day), so that you will have enough time to go over comments, ask questions to your group member (if you will end up having any), and finish revising your draft.

*In case of an emergency (not being able to contact your group member, not receiving effective and satisfactory feedback from your group member. etc.) please do contact me immediately so that I can support your revision process and take into consideration any possible case of lack of effort and contribution on anyone's part during my assessment process.
